Tough Guy Mud Race

Gents
Having retired from the Tough Guy Mud race due to wimping out and using my age and aches and pains as an excuse I suddenly felt I had let myself down. Having entered every race twice a year for the last 10 years I kind of missed the adrenaline buzz of putting myself through hell with lots of other mad people and trying to come out the other side in one piece. So I have entered myself for January 2010 (yes the cold one with ice cold water) and invite any other mad people to join me.
Cheers

Thanks !

Guys

Just wanted to say a big Thank You for all your help in me achieving one of my long term goals in getting my Brown Belt in BJJ. In fact its been a very long term goal and has taken just under 12 years. I feel this isn't a promotion just for me but for all the guys I've trained with, if it wasn't for them pushing me I would never have reached the required level.

I would especially like to thank David Onuma for his continued guidance and instruction of which has always been inspirational. Also one of the unsung hero's Kai Street (20 years my junior) who I class as more than just a training partner who over the years of some insane training in the garage at unearthly hours pushed and forced me to get to the next level.

Cheers
Andy

BJJ Seminar and Grading

Andy and 10 members of the club attended the BJJ seminar and grading at the Bob Breen Academy in London. The other instructors present were Eduardo Ferreira (Black Belt) and David Onuma (2 stripe Brown Belt), and the seminar was also attended by various other students.

The seminar was a great success and fun was had by all. Congratulations to Andy for being promoted to brown belt , also to Matt Macguire on being awarded his blue belt. As is custom in BJJ they both had to participate in the passar no corredor (running the gauntlet).

It is hoped that these seminars will become a regular thing and I'm sure we'll see many members returning for the next event. Thanks to the instructors and everyone who attended.

Tom

R.I.P Roger Barnes

It is with great sadness that I post this particular piece of news. Roger passed away suddenly last night (9th Mar) whilst cornering a fighter at the WEKAF British Championships in Northampton. The cause of death is at this moment not known.
Roger touched many people in both his personal and private life and he will be sorely missed.
Our thoughts go out to his Wife Susan and his children Daniel and Kimberly.
In the near future details will be posted for a seminar to raise funds to help his family.

MMA League: Round 2

The following fighters attended round 2 of the amateur MMA league in Nottingham and got the following results:

Matt Macguire: 2 fights, 2 draws
Allan Dillon: 2 fights, 1 draw, 1 loss
Gus Laverty: 2 fights 1 draw, 1 loss

We NEED more fighters for the next round of the league, so that our club has a better chance of creeping up the club league table. We also need some supporters, so if you don't want to fight just yet then come along and support our fighters. The next event is in February 09, so now is the time to start getting fit!

Check out the current league tables at www.mmaleague.tv

Kent BJJ Open

Matt Macguire fought in the Kent BJJ Open on the 02 November 2008. Matt won his first fight in the under 70kg white belt division by passing his opponent's guard and controlling the mount position.

Matt got a buy into the semi final, where he came up against a strong opponent from the London Fight Factory. Almost all of this fight was spent standing up, as Matt and the other fighter matched strength and locked up head to head. Matt defended a lot of takedowns and the scorecard was even at 0-0, but he was worried that he would lose the decision for not being the aggressor. Towards the end of the fight Matt jumped to guard. His opponenet passed the guard and took the North-South position; leaving Matt behind on points when the time was up. His opponent, Diego Vittel, went on to win the gold medal.

Matt was disappointed to have made a silly mistake, but enjoyed the competition nonetheless. Thanks go out to David Onuma, Kai Street, Eduardo Ferreira and of course Andy Nugent for the training they provided.

Improved Timetable

Please note as from September we have a new timetable, we now have individual lessons covering each martial art. There is also a new payment option plan which will vary on how many lessons a week you wish to attend. The Filipino Kali class will also include Staff/Bo and the Kali empty hands (Panatukan). The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class will be taught with the Gi (training suit) and no Gi grappling will be included in the JKD class on Mondays. The club will now be known as Andy Nugent's Academy of Martial Arts with new T-shirts soon to be available. I hope everyone enjoys the new look and extra classes.

MMA League: Round 1

First of all, congratulations to everyone who fought. Chris and Gus deserve special mention as this was the first time they represented the club in competition. Both of these first-timers had really tough opponents, but they showed great spirit and determination in some great fights. Despite his injured thumb, Tom fought two very close matches. Mark put in two solid performances, with some great striking to the body in his second match. I managed an armbar in my first match, but my second match was made very boring by me tying my opponent up in my guard for most of the match.

Here are our fighters' results after round 1:

Matt Macguire (featherweight): 2 fights, 1 win, 1 draw, 4 points
Gus Laverty (welterweight): 2 fights, 2 losses, 0 points
Mark Satterthwaite (light heavyweight): 2 fights, 2 draws, 2 points
Tom Anthony (heavyweight): 2 fights, 1 draw, 1 loss, 1 point
Chris Page (heavyweight): 2 fights, 2 losses, 0 points

Full results can be seen at http://mmaleague.tv/results.html

This was a great start; I hope everyone is looking forward to fighting again in November. It is not too late for other fighters to join in!

Instructor Promotion

Having returned from Los Angeles and completing his 6th instructor camp, Chief instructor Andy Nugent was promoted to Associate instructor by Guro Dan Inosanto.

This is a major milestone for our Academy, as there are only a handful of instructors in the U.K who have reached this level.

Andys students would like to take this opportunity to wish him continued success and growth in his personal training.

March 2008: Grapplers Showdown

Kai Street went down to battersea on saturday the 22 march to take part in the 1st Grapplers Showdown No Gi Tournement and represented the team on short notice, with only 2 weeks till the competetion started training for it. Kai Street went into the 3-6 years division even though who was eligible for the 1-3 years division and the under 79kg. Kai Street lost in the 1st round (someone has to) and survivived for five minutes before being mounted and back taken before being stood up after escaping the mount and the stand up was hard for Kai Street as he needed a submission to get the win and it would be a struggle to takedown the opponent who out weighed Kai Street by quite a few kilos.

But at the end of the day Kai went in to simply to compete for fun as was the 1st no gi competition. Thanks to the promoters and organisers was a good day and to CFS students who did very well and Andy Nugent, David Onuma and Wallid Mataleo for all training.

The Next event will be Seni for hopefully more of a team with more notcie.

September 2007: Andy Turns 40!

Congratulations go out to our chief instructor Andy Nugent, who has reached the ripe old age of 40. This also marks his 25th year in Martial Arts. Andy is a good sport when questioned or teased about his age, but you had better be ready as he always responds with:

Okay, lets get the gloves on and spar, I will show you what 40 is!

Everyone at the club wishes Andy all the best for the future, and we look forward to good training over the next 40 years.

November 2007 Results of the Northen Open

First fight was with Arren Brewster in the white belt category <70kg not too much to say about this fight as Arren went against someone who was extremely good and tapped Arren in less than 30 seconds with a pull to guard to arm bar (his opponent later won the gold).

Second fight was with Keith Draper in the white belt <83kg (on the day Keith actually weighed 74kg well under the weight) who did a pretty good takedown making the person off balance and threw him to the floor and got 2 points but was a bit too eager to get to mount and lost the position as his opponent claimed guard where Keith struggled to get out and his opponent couldn’t do anything after the time limit Keith was the winner winning by 2 points.

Third fight with Keith Draper where he lost by points was a fairly even match.

Fourth fight with Justin Warden was a fiercely competitive where Justin was getting slightly better in the transition positions and almost took the back but missed it as the opponent the mounted Justin and got a GI choke.

Justin also entered the absolute category (no weight limit) where he fought a good match escaped out of a good triangle and used all his strength and aggression even roaring like a lion.

Kai Street entering the blue belt <76kg who fought four matches and won the bronze medal. Highlights of the day for Kai was the scoring highly in the 1st match and winning by rear naked GI choke, scoring a big double legged takedown and heavily winded the guy and then on next fight passing the half guard as soon as the opponent tried to pull half guard. Kai lost the fight to the eventual winner by triangle choke, and then won his last fight for bronze medal.

Kai Street would like to thank Team Brasa for the coaching assistance from Rodrigo Cabral (www.londonfightfactory.net/bjj2-instructors.htm) and Felipe Linguista from Sao Paulo brazil and training provided by Andy Nugent and David Onuma (www.davidonuma.com)

Just to mention and commend Justin, Keith and Arren who are all beginners with a very short time in the GI (Keith 1st time wearing the GI).

November 2007: WEKAF British Championships 2007

On the 4th November 2007 Mark Satterthwaite and Matt Macguire represented the academy at the WEKAF British Stickfighting Championships. This full contact event was very busy this year, as selections for the World Championships in the Phillipines team are currently being made. It was a very long day, packed with fights. Matt and Mark had some good single and double stick fights... but they also learned how fit you need to be to jump around in that armour! Mark should be congratulated on winning the Silver Medal in the Heavyweight Single Stick Category. Another WEKAF event is planned for March 2008, and it would be great to get a big team together for this event: contact Matt to register your interest.

September 2007: The Call2Arms

On the 17th September 2007 Matt Macguire and Sean Coughlan fought at the Call2Arms event. This event has been evolving steadily and the variety of fighting formats available are too numerous to explain here; for full details visit www.call2arms.tv. It will suffice to say that this minimal rules, low armour stick fighting event often features mixed martial arts technique, but ultimately focuses on full contact stick fighting. The damage that can be taken in these matches is very real, so Sean deserves particular praise for having stepped onto the mat for the first time. Sean fought call2arms veteran and lifelong martial artist Mike Dunnage. This was a great experience for Sean, as he was able to test himself against a heavier, more experienced opponent. Matt was fortunate enough to match up with former world stick fighting champion and three time British MMA champion Neil Mcleod. This match did not feature much stick fighting, as Matt broke his stick with the first strike! The fight quickly went to ground, leaving Matt and Neil striking judiciously whilst jostling for positions and submissions from the guard. Many thanks go out to those who came along to support the fighters, as well as the Dunnage Brothers, for continuing to host this unique event.

November 2007: Black Belt Grading

On the 11th of November 2007, the academy held a grading for the levels of Black Belt in Jeet Kune Do and Apprentice Instructor in Jun Fan Gung Fu. Congratulations go out to Kai Street and Chris who gained their Black Belts, whilst Matt Macguire and Mark Satterthwaite were awarded the level of apprentice instructor. It was a tough, 3 hour grading, which was made even more challenging by the exceptional sparring at the end- thanks go out to all those who joined in. Everyone was ready to drop by the end of the techniques section, so it took a lot of spirit to fight through... the boxing, then the kickboxing, then the shootwresting, then the groundfighting, then the mixed martial arts and finally the armoured Kali stick fighting. This was a real gauntlet, but the academy makes a point of having no paper tigers, so the top grades have to really be earned.

July 2007: Medal Haul at Stoke BJJ

The 22nd July 2007 saw fighters from the academy competing in the 1st Stoke On Trent Open BJJ Championships. This early day was well worth the effort as the club brought back four medals, and was placed second in the overall medal ranking. Kai Street won bronze in the lightweight blue-belt category, and then upped his game at the end of the day to take gold in the absolute category. Kai managed some impressive submissions against larger opponents in this category. Matt Macguire played it safe in his matches by maintaining dominant positions: he took the gold in the lightweight white-belt category. Tom Antony took the silver in a memorable heavyweight white-belt match. Tom also competed in the absolute category. Alan Dillon also competed as a middleweight white-belt, and fought well against some very capable opponents. Team spirit was running high on the day, and the fighters all agreed that the encouragement they received played a role in their success.
