Jeet Kune Do
The translation of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is ‘Way of the intercepting fist’ and was a term coined by Bruce Lee in the late sixties. By drawing from a number of martial arts styles Bruce Lee devised a unique fighting method that incorporated all the combat ranges. No longer was a student limited to one particular style or set of rules, allowing them to train and develop their own attributes and fighting method in all ranges.
Using Jun Fan Gung Fu as its foundation, Jeet Kune Do has developed as a modern fighting art. The student is taught how to blend and flow from one range to another using his/her own strengths, enabling them to recognise their weaknesses which may require further work.
The JKD classes bring together a blend of Jun Fan, Thai/Kick Boxing, Filipino Martial Arts and CSW/BJJ.
Jun Fan Gung Fu
Jun Fan Gung Fu (JFGF) was the original art developed by Bruce Lee, taking its name from Bruce Lee’s Chinese name of ‘Lee Jun Fan’ combined with the Cantonese spelling of the term Kung Fu (Gung Fu).
JFGF incorporates four ranges of combat, kicking, punching, trapping and grappling with training methods that are both practical and economical. Some of the arts that Bruce Lee was influenced by were Western boxing, Wing Chun, Ju-Jitsu and more traditional kicking methods from Japanese and Korean arts.
JFGF focuses strongly on the development of attributes such as speed, timing, body mechanics and co-ordination. The use of focus mitts, kicking shields, energy drills and progressive sparring make this a formidable and effective art.
The Filipino Martial Arts (Kali)
Kali is one of many terms used to describe the Filipino Martial Arts, it is one of the most complete and comprehensive weapon based systems that addresses all combative ranges.
The FMA program introduces students to several areas including single/double stick, single/double knife and stick & dagger. Kali also has a very effective empty hands programme (Panatukan) which translates from the weapon based movements.
With the use of weapons students develop their attributes such as speed, timing and agility but will also learn sensitivity drills such as Hubud and grappling (Dumog)
Thai Boxing
Known as the science of eight limbs, Muay Thai is a highly effective fighting art from Thailand. Proving itself as one of the toughest ring sports through the use of kicks, punches, elbows, knees & stand up grappling, it also provides an excellent base for street defence. The training itself provides a great workout and develops physical and mental conditioning. Students are taught how to use proper body mechanics to maximum effect, thus developing solid realistic techniques.
The Academy is affiliated to one of the UK’s leading Thai Boxing organisations ‘Phraya Pichai Muay Thai’. Through its founder Bob Spour we have direct access to top trainers in Thailand giving the opportunity for students to travel to Thailand to train with the World leading coaches.
Combat Submission Wrestling
For the last twenty-two years, Erik Paulson has studied the art of grappling. Having gained worldwide fame competing in many pay-per-view, no-holds-barred tournaments, he is now undefeated in Japan where he is the World Light-Heavyweight Shootwrestling Champion.
Erik’s system, Combat Submission Wrestling, blends grappling techniques and concepts from Judo, Freestyle Wrestling and Greco-Roman Wrestling with techniques and submissions from Shootwrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo and Catchascatchcan, as well as striking from Boxing, Muay Thai & French Savate. Erik is famous for his unbelievable repertoire of submission holds and is recognized as a virtual encyclopedia of leg locks. Using many skill & attribute drills each art offers different elements to the CSW system.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
A fighting system from Brazil, BJJ is very quickly becoming popular especially for its effective ground fighting.
It was originally developed from traditional Jiu-Jitsu by the Gracie family of Brazil and was specifically designed to allow a smaller person defeat a larger person by sophisticated application of leverage and technique. By gaining superior position on your opponent a myriad of chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations can be applied. At present the training is without the traditional GI (white training suit) but this can be taught to individual students on a private lesson basis if required.
